The Craig Sea Sharks toughed it out in snow and rain Saturday in Steamboat Springs. Coach Marin Campbell said that many of the swimmers had personal bests despite the conditions. Chris Compton, Tucker Trujillo (11 to 12), and Sassy Murray (9 to 10) each earned high points for scoring the most points in their respective age groups. Other top finishers were: Katie Gainor and Ashleigh McDonald, first and second in the 50 yard breaststroke; Matt Hulstine, fourth in the 50 backstroke; Mitch Romney, third in the 50 butterfly.
Sixth-grade girls AAU team improves
The sixth-grade girls AAU basketball team that competed in Greeley came back with an improved national ranking. The Bulldogs finished the weekend 2-6 in the Mid American Youth Basketball Tournament in Greeley. With wins against the Huskies from Washington and Fort Collins, the Bulldogs moved from the 19th-ranked team in its division to seventh.
"They played well all weekend," coach Justin Gallegos said. "We had two girls leave early, and that hurt us, but to improve to seventh in the country is impressive."
Rodeo completes regular season
The Moffat County High School rodeo team completed its regular season with a three-day rodeo from Friday to Sunday in Rocky Ford.
Becky White and Tia Brannan improved their standings with high-scoring weekends. On Day 1, White was second in pole bending, third in barrel racing and fourth in goat tying. She was third in goats on Day 2, and she was third in poles and seventh in goats on Day 3. Brannan placed high in goat tying all three days. She was third on Day 1, fifth on Day 2 and second on Day 3. She was also seventh in barrel racing on Day 1. Kendel Fawcett earned points with an eighth-place finish in pole bending. Janice McIntyre was ninth in barrel racing and eighth in poles during the weekend, as well.
