Moffat County officials hope to have a new planning department employee by the end of the month.
There currently is no one in the planning department. Building Inspector Pat Mosbey has been handling the planning director's responsibilities since Sue Graler left the position in March.
The new employee's title will be Moffat County planner, instead of planning director.
The planner's duties will include administering zoning applications, compiling planning data and coordinating planning meetings.
Mosbey hopes the new planner can tackle home address issues and zoning regulations, two areas that need a lot of attention, he said.
Interviews for the full-time position will begin this week.
Moffat County Human Res-ources director Lynette Running said the county hopes to fill the position as soon as possible.
The planning position has undergone a lot of changes in recent years.
In 2003, the commissioners cut the position from full- to part-time in an effort to cut costs and balance the 2004 budget.
When the position became part-time, responsibilities such as fixing some of the county's addressing problems and rewriting zoning regulations fell by the wayside.
Since March, the position has been vacant.
The commissioners approved a personnel requisition for the planning department last month by a 2-1 vote. Commissioner Tom Gray cast the lone dissenting vote.
"I just wanted to go a little slower," Gray said Monday.
Gray said he didn't have enough information at the time to decide whether the position should be full- or part-time.
Mosbey said the county needs a full-time planner sooner rather than later.
"There are a lot of issues that have been on the backburner since Sue went part-time," Mosbey said.
Graler, who now works for KRAI, said she was glad to hear the commissioners made the planner position full time.
"There's too much work to do to do it in 20 hours per week," she said.
Planning is especially important now because the town is expected to grow, Graler said.
"Development is coming our way, and it's coming fast," Graler said.
