Lightning fire burns in Dinosaur Monument
Dinosaur National Monument fire officials were monitoring a lightning fire west of Harper's Corner Observation Point on Friday.
The fire, which started last weekend, is less than 1 acre and is burning in Douglas fir, piñon, and juniper. The area has a concentration of dead and fallen timber.
Because the fire is a natural ignition, it is being managed for resource benefits. Fire plays a functional role in the ecosystem, and without it the ecosystem is being altered. The fire will be suppressed if it is no longer achieving resource benefits or if public safety or smoke becomes a concern.
Dinosaur National Monu--ment has been managing natural ignition fires since the early 1980s and has been recognized as leaders in managing fire use.
To report a wildland fire in the Northwest Colorado area, contact the Craig Interagency Dispatch Center at 826-5037 or in the Northwestern Utah area, contact the Unitah Basin Interagency Dispatch Center at 435-789-7021.
