MCHS alum finishes 4th in steeplechase
Former Moffat County High School athlete and Western State College senior Kelly Christensen finished his collegiate track career with a fourth-place finish in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the NCAA Division 2national championship in Abilene, Texas, during the weekend.
Christensen finished in a time of 9 minutes, 7.26 seconds.
The honor was his fifth All-American honor. Christensen maintains one year of eligibility in cross country at Western State College.
He was third at cross-country nationals in the fall and he finished first in the steeplechase as a junior.
Sea Sharks open
season in Rangely
The Craig Sea Sharks summer club opened its season in Rangely last weekend.
Jesse Kurz won the 25-yard backstroke and the 100 freestyle in the 7-year-old division. Jesse was also the high-point trophy winner. Bailey Kurz finished third in the 25 backstroke
Tanner Snyder won the 25 freestyle in the 8-year-old division.
Tasha Romney was the second-place finisher in the 13 to 14 age group. Kelsey Conci won the 50 and 100 freestyle in the 15-and-older division. Caitlin Conci was second in the 100 butterfly, third in the 50 freestyle and third in the 100 backstroke.
High school rodeo team in Monte Vista
The traditional three-day rodeo during Memorial Day weekend for the Colorado State High School Rodeo Association took place this year in Monte Vista.
On Saturday, Moffat County rodeo team members who placed in the top 10 were: Kendel Fawcett, fifth in barrel racing, 10th in team roping; Becky White, sixth in goat tying, seventh in pole bending. Sunday's only top finisher was Fawcett in pole bending. In Monday's rodeo, Justin Hegwer was third in saddle bronc; White was fifth in barrel racing, eighth in goat tying and sixth in pole bending; Fawcett was 10th in breakaway roping, seventh in goat tying and 10th in pole bending.
The rodeo team is conducting a fund-raiser for the team from now until July 3. The goal of the Cow Pie Fund-raiser is to raise money for the rodeo members as well as provide an opportunity for one lucky participant to win up to $2,500.
