Cops cast a line to children

Sheyenne Cromer has been pestering her father to go fishing for the past month. The 7-year-old finally got her chance to reel in a few fish Wednesday at the Cops and Kids fishing day.

"She caught the first fish here last year," said Sheyenne's mother, Shirley Cromer.

About 30 children fished with adults Wednesday at the pond behind the Moffat County Public Safety Center. The event aims to get children comfortable being around cops. Officers from the Craig Police Department, Moffat County Sheriff's Office and Colorado State Patrol were busy threading worms onto fishhooks, measuring fish and cooking up food at the third annual event.

Moffat County Deputy John Kurz spent the time fishing with his son, Dylan. The 8-year-old said he doesn't get to fish much with his dad, but it's a sport that he likes.

"Did you see how big that one was?" Dylan said, gesturing a full arm's length. "It was this big."

"That's what makes him a good fisherman," his dad quipped.

Moffat County Jail Admin--istrator Lt. Dean Herndon said the event is a good opportunity to get children involved in a sport that families can enjoy.

"I think as far as fishing goes, it gets (children) started in something positive," he said. "It shows what families can do together."

Prizes were awarded for a range of catches, including biggest and smallest fish. Tackle boxes and fishing poles were given away. Participants also were treated to hot dogs and drinks.

The opportunity to see law officers in uniform and helping children fish has made a difference to young Sheyenne, her mother said. Now, her daughter isn't nervous to be around a police officer, Shirley Cromer said.

"I think she was shy because of the gun thing," Cromer said.

The pond, dubbed the Little Rascals Pond, is open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. until Oct. 1 for children 12 and younger. It also is open to people 18 and younger who have disabilities. An adult should accompany anglers. The fishing limit will be two fish per child.
