Music 'from way back when'

Sweet Adelines will hold concert, teen idol competition

The Sweet Adelines Yampa Valley chapter is bringing a little piece of Hollywood to Craig this weekend.

For their annual fund-raiser concert, the women are holding a teen idol show, similar to Fox's "American Idol" television show, and silent auction Saturday night.

"We want to take everybody back to their teenage years," show Chairwoman Ivy Davis said.

The female, four-part harmony a cappella group will perform numbers from the 1950s through 1990s, including songs such as "It's My Party," "YMCA" and "I Believe I Can Fly."

"It's hopefully something they can remember from way back when," Davis said.

The group will perform in between the acts of six local teenagers, who will compete for the title of Craig Teen Idol.

The competitors are Laurel Luke, Melody Butler, Will Schneegas, Jeremy Wright, Thea Travers and Holly Firestone, all Moffat County High School students. Each will sing a song of his or her choice, and the audience will vote on the best performer at intermission.

The Sweet Adelines, under the direction of Denise Whitney, will sing throughout the second half of the program and the idol winner will be announced at the end of the evening. Each competitor will receive a cash prize.

"That's what this year's about, is the kids and letting them perform and put on the best performance they're able to do," Davis said.

The barbershop quartet High on Harmony, featuring Jeanne Stalcar, Karla Watson, Jan Pluym and Whitney, also will perform. Dave Morris will serve as master of ceremonies for the event.

A silent auction will start 45 minutes before the 7 p.m. show. With over $2,700 in donated items, some of the things up for sale include sleigh rides, a rafting trip, Rockies tickets, furniture, pottery, opera tickets and a variety of gift certificates to businesses in Craig, Hayden, Steamboat Springs and Meeker.

Bidding will continue through the end of intermission. Winners will be listed at the end of the show. Payment options include cash, check, Visa and Mastercard.

The event starts at 7 p.m. Saturday at Moffat County High School. Tickets are available from any Sweet Adelines member or at Loyd's Cleaners, 552 Breeze St.

Adults are $7 in advance or $8 at the door; seniors are $5 in advance or $6 at the door; and students are $3.50 in advance or $4 at the door. Children younger than 5 are free.

Sweet Adelines Yampa Valley chapter has 20 members, and always is looking for more. Proceeds from Saturday's event will go toward music, costumes, coaching and the annual scholarships they award to local graduates.

"We want kids to sing, we want kids to play music, to be well-rounded and just to have fun doing it all," Davis said.
