City removes dead horses

Craig police responded to a complaint Tuesday of two dead horses on the property of Eaton's Auto Service in the 1100 block of E. Victory Way.

Craig Police Code Enforcement Officer Becky Otis said she received an order from Craig Municipal Court Judge Kevin Peck to remove the animals. Otis said she had tried earlier this month to contact property owner Neldon Lee Alderidge after a resident had called to complain about one dead horse on the site.

Alderidge received the second notice, Otis said.

"We were called before because it had become a health risk," Otis said. "It breaks my heart because it was somebody's pet. I don't know where (Alderidge) got them from."

The service station reportedly runs a towing business.

Otis said the property owner would be charged for the cost to haul the dead animals to the landfill plus an additional 20 percent of the costs to handle the situation.
