Wrestlers out-duel Rifle, Delta

Even without standout junior Korey Kostur, the Moffat County High School wrestling team was able to remain undefeated in in-state duals Thursday night.

The Bulldogs defeated host Delta, 41-28, and Rifle 45-33, with their undefeated 140- pounder at home sick.

"The young guys are still a little lazy on the bottom," coach Roman Gutierrez said. "But every time out, they get a little more experience."

The Bulldogs finished 16-12, which included giving up forfeits without a wrestler at 125 and picking up three forfeits.

Undefeated Bulldogs were Brice Boling, 103, Eric Fredrickson, 130, Nick Navratil, 189, Scott Garoutte, 215, and Kyle Fredrickson, 275.

"Brice continues to work hard and keep active in his matches," Gutierrez said. "Eric wrestled his match tough against the guy he met at the Warrior."

Eric Fredrickson defeated Rifle's Tyler Thompson 5-3 in overtime. Fredrickson defeated Thompson 7-3 for fifth place at the Warrior Classic in December.

Senior Shayne Zimmerman, 160, was leading Anthony Laurita of Delta, the No. 3 wrestler in Class 4A, before giving up 10 unanswered points to lose, 10-4.

Senior Brent Chamberlain went 1-1 for the night and could have wrestled two wrestlers ranked in the top four in the state, Delta's Tyler Morfitt, No. 1, and Rifle's Casie Dunlap, No. 4, but although Dunlap weighed in he never wrestled, Gutierrez said. Chamberlain was unable to beat Morfitt.

Scott Garoutte had two byes and has wrestled only twice and picked up four byes since Christmas break.

That won't be the case this weekend at the Palisade Invitational.

Garoutte will see Fruita's Tyler Ryan (No. 3 in 5A) and Hotchkiss's Dusty Carver (No. 3 in 3A).

"If we can get Korey back, I think we'll be in the thick of things as a team," Gutierrez said. "There should be some solid individuals at the tournament."
