Moffat girsl to host sub-region

February 20, 2005

For the Moffat County girls basketball team, the season is just beginning.

Battle Mountain's season is over, barring a CHSAA-seeding miracle.

The Bulldogs came to town and ripped off a 73-41 win over Battle Mountain to complete a perfect 14-0 Western Slope League record and a 21-1 regular season.

"We're very proud of our girls," Moffat coach Craig Mortensen said. "We're very happy for them. We really have a pretty good team. They've done what I thought they could do. When we started out, I thought they could do this and they've done it."

Moffat rolled out to a 16-0 first quarter lead, led by as much as 20 in the second and never looked back.

The Bulldogs had four players in double digits -- Brandie Telfer (18), Angie Charchalis (12), Mari Katherine Raftopoulos (12) and Erin Robinson (10).

"(Friday) night, we had four players in double figures and Brandie wasn't one of them," Mortensen said. "She's our leading scorer. When she doesn't score, we have other players to step up. We can score in a variety of ways. That makes it pretty tough to guard."

While the Bulldogs are hosting a regional tournament, the Huskies finished the season at 5-9 and 8-13. Saturday night could have been a swan song for seniors Katie Hite, Alexis Guinn and Meagan Reigel.

The Huskies will face Mullen Friday in Craig.

The Bulldogs received one of the top seeds for the state playoffs. They will host a sub-region that also includes D'Evelyn, Steamboat Springs, Montrose, Mullen and Battle Mountain.

Moffat County has a bye Friday and will play Saturday night for the chance to move to the regional portion of the tournament. The Bulldogs will face the winner of D'Evelyn and Steamboat.

Moffat defeated Steamboat twice this season, but the second game was the closest any WSL team came to the Bulldogs in the regular season. Moffat pulled out a 52-50 win.

D'Evelyn and Moffat have only one common opponent in Evergreen for the season. The Bulldogs beat the Cougars 63-40 in December. D'Evelyn defeated the Cougars 51-43 during league play.
