Reflectors installed

along U.S. Highway 40

The Colorado Department of Transportation has begun to install a Deer Warning System along U.S. Highway 40 east of Craig. The specialized reflectors help prevent deer and elk from crossing the highway when vehicles are present. When the posts are hit by light, they send a perpendicular beam across the highway that should discourage wildlife from crossing. The pilot project costs $148,000 and should be completed next week with five- to 10-minute delays.

Great American Spitout continues through Friday

The "Great American Spitout" started Sunday and continues through Friday. During "Through with Chew Week," state health agencies aim to help those with the chewing tobacco habit quit.

Despite common misperceptions that chew is safer than cigarettes, smokeless tobacco contains two to three times the level of nicotine found in cigarettes.

Every year in the United States, smokeless tobacco is responsible for more than 30,000 oral cancer diagnoses and more than 8,000 deaths. Call the Northwest Colorado Visiting Nurse Association at 824-8233.
