Craig gymnast Jenkins, 10, qualifies for state meet
It's only in the middle of February but Heather Jenkins already has plans for April.
The 10-year-old fifth-grader competed in gymnastics at Green Mountain High School in Lakewood last weekend.
She earned a spot at the state competition in April by receiving an all-around score better than 33.
"(The score) was her best ever," Gymstar Fun'n'Fit Gymnastics owner Kelly Davidson said.
Jenkins earned an overall 34.7 with scores of 8.75 on the vault, 8.5 on the uneven bars, 8.65 on the beam and 8.8 on the floor exercise.
"I did the best on floor," Jenkins said.
She finished third overall and in each event in the Level 7 competition. She was competing among senior-age gymnasts who were at least 13 years old.
The competition was the first state-qualifying meet for the winter/spring season. There are two more state-qualifying competitions before the state meet in April.
Jenkins said she hopes to earn an overall score of 36 this year.
"I want to stick my back walkover on the vault," she said.
"We've done well as a gym since we started competing," Davidson said. "We've had someone at every state level."
The other qualifying meets are in Grand Junction and Englewood.
