Craig elementary students sending gifts to Iraq troops

To the Editor:

We are raising money and collecting travel-size games to send to Army Spc. Greg Calim and Bravo Company.

When Bravo Company is not on duty, they are bored in Iraq.

We are second- and fourth-grade students from East Elementary School in Craig. We would like everyone to help. Please bring your donation or travel-size game to Mrs. Georgiou's room, No. 26, or Mrs. Foster's room, No. 13, during school hours.

We are excited about sending our gifts to Iraq so hurry to East Elementary by Feb. 28.

Sheriff shouldn't blame gas companies for drug problem

To the Editor:

We find it interesting that Sheriff Grinstead is trying to blame Craig's drug problem on gas companies that aren't even here yet. We have worked in the oil field for years, and there isn't an oil and gas company around that doesn't have a drug-testing policy in place.

We find it very insulting because of our occupation we are automatically accused of being drug users. Maybe you should look at the big picture: meth use here is a problem, and obviously it is entwined with almost every occupation and to single out just one is ridiculous.

Reader welcomes Wal-Mart over another bank

To the Editor:

Craig needs a Wal-Mart more than another bank.

Craig needs a Wal-Mart because perhaps more people would shop at home and not drive to Grand Junction, Denver or elsewhere to purchase their merchandise. I could not buy a button in Craig and one person I know had to go to Steamboat Springs to buy a spool of green thread!

There is a very small amount of choices for merchandise in Craig, and this is very unfortunate for people who cannot go to other cities to shop.

A Wal-Mart would increase the sales and property tax revenue to the city of Craig, besides offering many job opportunities to people in the work force, thereby cutting down Welfare, food stamps, Medicaid, unemployment, etc.

We already have three established banks and a credit union, why do we need more?

I also wonder how many of our city management personnel shop at home or go elsewhere to do their shopping?

Here's one vote for Wal-Mart!

Thank you,

Wanda Montieth
