The rates at the Moffat County landfill could go up in the next few months.

During their regular monthly meeting, Moffat County commissioners will discuss the possibility of raising all the rates at the landfill.

It costs $6 per resident truckload and $12 per non-resident truckload to dump trash at the landfill under current county policy.

The Moffat County Road and Bridge Department is proposing raising the cost to $8 for residents and $16 for non-residents.

The department is looking for ways to work with a tight budget, Linda DeRose of the department said.

It cut back on road treatments in 2006 because of a budget crunch.

"This is one way we can at least make it pay for itself," she said.

The cost per ton for commercial trucks also could go up from $25 to $30 for residents and from $50 to $60 for non-residents.

DeRose said she doesn't expect commissioners to make a final decision about the new rules Tuesday.

It's likely commissioners will want to meet with the city of Craig before raising the costs, she said.

An increase in cost per ton would primarily affect the city, which regularly dumps trash at the landfill.

Commissioner Saed Tayyara, the liaison between the city and county, said he wants to give the city ample notice before the commissioners raise landfill rates.

If commissioners vote to raise the rates, the new prices probably won't go into effect until April or May, Tayyara said.

By waiting a few months, the city will have a chance to prepare for the rate increase, he said.

On Tuesday, commissioners also will discuss changes to the Moffat County Tourism Association.

The association has been without a director since Steve Miller resigned in July.

Commissioners will consider combining the tourism association director post with a position at the Craig Chamber of Commerce.

Chamber director Annette Gianinetti said she supports combining positions.

"So much of what the Chamber and the tourism association does overlaps," Gianinetti said.

Commissioners must sign a final 2006 budget by Dec. 13.

Also Tuesday, the board will discuss and possibly make a decision on whether to sell Shadow Mountain Clubhouse to help balance the budget.
