Kasilof resident Mr. Earnest "Jim" Montgomery, 74, died Tuesday, August 23, 2005, of cancer at his home in Kasilof.
A celebration of Jim's life is at 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 28, 2005, at the Tustumena Lodge, Mile 111 Sterling Hwy in Kasilof.
Mr. Montgomery was born May 30, 1931, in Craig. He had graduated from High School in Baggs, Wyo. Mr. Montgomery had entered into the U.S. Navy in 1950 and served during the Korean Conflict until he was honorably discharged in 1954. He met his wife, Kathy, and they dated for two years before they married Oct. 6, 1965 in Craig. Mr. Montgomery had worked as a logger and truck driver in Colorado and Wyoming. In addition, he worked as a coal miner for 13 years at the ColoWyo Coal Mine in Craig, from which he retired. Mr. Montgomery enjoyed hunting, fishing, traveling and family activities. The family wrote, "Jim was a devoted husband and family man."
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Gladys Montgomery; and brother, Arthur Benton Montgomery. He is survived by his wife, Kathy Montgomery of Kasilof, Alaska; daughter, Shelly Montgomery of Rangley; son and daughter in-law, Bryan and Mary Beth Montgomery of Kasilof; step-son and step daughter in-law, Andy and Leslie Cook of Niles, MI; step son, Richard Dunckley and family of Craig; grandson, Justin Montgomery Gate of Kenai; five grandchildren; and numerous children of our hearts; sister, Gladys Mansfield of Craig; brothers, Robert Montgomery and family of Helena, Mont., Tom Shaffer and family of Ore., Fred and Joe Shaffer and thier families all of Craig.
