Three Moffat County residents have picked up the paperwork necessary to file for one of the three school board seats up for election in November.
One of those is Rod Durham, currently the District 6 representative.
Board president John Well-man and Gary Ellgen, serving in Districts 2 and 4 respectively, are term-limited.
Considering Ellgen's seat is Sandy Johns. Karen Stillion will seek Wellman's.
Stillion is the only person who has returned the nomination packet.
Nomination packets were available Aug. 3 and are due back Friday. If no other candidates come forward by the deadline, the election will be canceled and the three current candidates will win the seats, if they return their packets.
Ellgen has served on the school board for 13 years. Wellman served two four-year terms.
Ellgen said he'll miss the board members he has worked with. "Every board I've been on has been really neat," he said.
Board member Trish Snyder recommends that those considering running for a board position closely evaluate their reasons for wanting to run.
"Don't have an agenda," she said. "If you have one particular issue, that's not a reason to run."
School board members serve depending on the district in which they live.
District 2 encompasses all of Moffat County south of First Street. District 4 includes U.S. Highway 40 north through Shadow Mountain Village, bordered by Moffat County Road 7 on the west and Ranney Street on the east. District 6 is northeast of Craig.
District maps are available at the School Administration Building.
Although board members must live in the district they represent, the public at large elects them. It is a nonpartisan election.
To get on the Nov. 1 ballot, potential board members must have a petition signed by at least 50 registered voters.
Board terms are for four years, and the position is not paid.
School District Election Of--ficial Vicki Duncan said there have been no problems getting candidates in the past two elections, though she knows there have been times when it was difficult.
