Family living crystal meth nightmare

I'm the mother of a methamphetamine addict and my prayer is that no one should have to go through that hell.

My son was in jail on meth-related charges with the man who wrote the following poem, who was also in jail on meth-related charges. These men are middle-aged and don't want to be on meth, but like the poem says, "it has become their soul."

I first came to realize my son was on drugs about 12 years ago, right here in Craig. I was in denial, I thought drugs were a big-city problem, not for little Craig. When I realized my son was really doing drugs and they called it "crank or meth," I wanted it fixed immediately. I went to the family doctor and all he could tell me was that meth is one of the most addictive substances known to man. I called nurses I knew; they had no answers. I called rehabilitation places, and they wanted money up front and he had to come in willingly.

I went to our pastor and tried to get him to go talk to my son. I think he tried to locate him once or twice with no luck. The pastor never called us or came to our house to ask how we were doing or to help us in any way. We were on our own.

I read everything I could find about the drug, but no one was talking in those days. It was just swept under the rug. I don't think there are many answers today, but at least Craig is bringing it out into the open. If, by doing that, one person could see what it does to families and not use it, it would be worth it.

The users will pretty much get picked up for some crime and go through the court system, but the courts don't know what to do with them, so they turn them loose. I've always said they re-cycle them. A few go to prison, but they get into drugs in prison, too. So, they're just as addicted when they come out as when they go in. Nobody can afford rehab, so even if they go, they really need support groups and drug testing for a long time afterward. I don't have the answers, but neither do the courts or police.

We're in a war against terrorism, as we probably should be. Sept. 11, 2001, was a horrible thing and we lost about 4,000 people, but drug-related crimes and deaths in America are costing us that many lives and more per year, yet funding to fight drugs is being cut.

By the time your family starts exhibiting symptoms of using, awake at all hours and then sleeping for days, losing weight, mood swings, stealing from you, lying, covering windows with blankets, and the list goes on, it's too late. We have to find a way to stop it before it starts.

I've read that meth is what Hitler used, and now it is much more potent than it was then. It's said that there is only a 6 percent recovery rate.

This poem really says it all. It needs to be posted in schools, work places, bedroom walls, etc. Will they pay attention to it? Probably not many, but if it would save a few, it would be a beginning.

Sincerely,

Phyllis Virden

I destroy homes, I tear families apart,

I take your children, and that's just the start.

I'm more valued than diamonds, more precious than gold,

The sorrow I bring is a sight to behold.

If you need me, I'm easily found,

I live all around you, in school and in town.

I live down the street, and maybe next door.

I'm made in a lab, but not like you would think,

I can even be made under your kitchen sink,

In your children's closet and even out in the woods.

My power is awesome, try me, you'll see,

But if you do, you may never break free.

Just try me once and I might let you go,

But if you try me twice, then I am your soul.

When I possess you, you'll steal and you'll lie,

You'll do what you have to just to get high.

The crimes you commit for my narcotic charms,

Will be worth the pleasures you feel in your arms.

You'll lie to your mother, you'll steal from your dad,

When you see their tears, you'll probably feel sad.

Just forget your morals and how you were raised,

I'll be your conscience, and I'll teach you my ways.

I take kids from their parents,

I take parents from their kids,

I take people from God, I separate friends.

I'll take everything from you, your looks and your pride,

I'll be there with you always, right by your side.

You'll give up everything,

Your family , your home, your money, your friends,

Then you'll be alone.

I'll take and I'll take until you have no more to give,

When I finish with you, you'll be lucky to live.

If you try me, be warned, this is not a game,

If given the chance, I'll drive you insane.

I'll ravage your body, I'll control your mind,

I'll own you completely, your soul will be mine.

The nightmares I'll give you while you're lying in bed,

My voices you will hear inside your head.

The sweats, the shakes, and the visions you'll see,

I want you to know these things are gifts from me.

By then it's too late, you'll know in your heart,

That you are now mine and we shall not part.

You'll regret that you tried me, they always do,

But you came to me, not I to you.

You knew this would happen, many times you were told,

But you challenged my powers, you chose to be bold.

You could have said no and then walked away,

If you had to do it over, what would you say?

My power is awesome, like I told you before.

I'll be your master, you'll be my slave,

I'll even help take you to your grave.

Now that you've met me, what will you do,

Will you try me or not, it's up to you?

I can show you more misery than words can tell,

Come hold my hand and let me lead you to hell.

If this scares you to death, then it certainly should.

I have many names, but there's one you'll know best,

I'm sure you've heard of me,

My name is CRYSTAL METH.
