Local women honored by state VFW

Two of the local Veterans of Foreign Wars group's newest members are its best volunteers.

Amanda Schneider has been named volunteer of the year for VFW Post 4265 and Mary Walters has been named volunteer of the year for the VFW Post 4265 Women's Auxiliary.

Both were awarded the Salute to Service volunteer award from the state VFW.

Walters and Schneider volunteer for the VFW and other community organizations.

"She is always there when we need her to do something," Dora Watson of the Ladies Auxiliary said about Walters.

Walters joined the auxiliary about a year and a half ago, shortly after she retired from Moffat County School District. Her husband, David Watson, served in Vietnam and is a member of the VFW.

"My outlook in life is to help the needy," Walters said.

As a member of the auxiliary, she helps out with monthly senior dinners by serving food and making gifts. She helps at funerals and will serve food at the Hometown Heroes picnic in May. She'll be busy this week making salads for the salad and sandwich lunch the auxiliary is hosting at the VFW from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m Friday. The cost is $5.

Walters also leads a crochet club of 13 enrolled members. She teaches people to crochet and makes baby blankets and booties, which she donates to the Yampa Valley Pregnancy Center.

Walters rounds out her volunteer work by helping senior citizens at Sunset Meadows. She brings them medicine, helps with bingo, and most recently volunteered at the 9Health Fair.

VFW Commander Ray Talkington had high praise for Schneider.

"Everything we do she has participated in or is willing participate in," Talkington said.

Schneider served in the Navy and now works for the Craig Daily Press.

At the VFW, Schneider serves as the games manager and helps with all the post's volunteer projects and fund-raisers.

She has served as president of the Ride-n-Tie Rodeo, secretary of the Hayden Speedway and sat on the Moffat County Fair Board.

However, she has scaled back to spend more time with her daughter.

"She's just a good all around kid," Talkington said.
