Rosaries, Bibles and books

For the past six months, Mary Beth Buchanan has been supplying Craig's Catholic faithful with religious gifts and items.

At a store in St. Michael's Catholic Church, Buchanan sells rosaries, books, music, cards and Bibles. Buchanan said she loves doing it.

The store got hammered before last week's First Communion services, Buchanan said. But she's hoping to begin stocking the store with a larger inventory.

"I'm going to start ordering so it looks like an actual gift shop," she said.

Currently, she keeps some items in stock and orders everything else upon request. She has a surplus of Spanish greeting cards, which one of the church's previous priests ordered. Buchanan hopes to sell them during bilingual Mass.

She sells many of the books written by Pope John Paul II. She wasn't sure whether his death would increase the demand for his books.

Although the store's only scheduled hours are on the weekends, Buchanan opens at the customers' request.

The store doesn't make a profit, she said. Although it is in the church, it isn't part of the church.

Running the store is Buchanan's third job. She also works as a product demonstrator and recently obtained a position as a mystery shopper.

Along with a partner, she demonstrates products at Kmart and other stores.

She got the mystery shopper job over the Internet and has yet to receive an assignment. But she's excited all the same. When she starts work, she expects to shop establishments such as McDonald's. She'll rate the quality of the food and service and get reimbursed later.

Buchanan was recently confirmed in the Catholic Church. She chose St. Cecilia, the patron saint of musicians, as her saint, because Cecilia is her mom's middle name.

She was raised in the Catholic Church while growing up in Ark-ansas. But her father became ill, and her family moved to Meeker to be near relatives.

Eventually, they moved to Craig. Buchanan likes it here more than Meeker, because there's more to do.
