The 4th Grade Dictionary Project has been providing pocket dictionaries to fourth-graders in Northwestern Colorado since 1999. The project was started by a couple of mothers with the support of Colorado Northwestern Community College, local businesses, civic organizations and parent advisory committees. In May 2004, dictionaries were distributed in Craig, Yampa, Hayden, Meeker, Rangely, Maybell and Baggs, Wyo. Spanish dictionaries were presented to area students from Spanish-speaking homes, and additional English and Spanish dictionaries were presented for classroom use.

Sheriff Buddy Grinstead received a phone call recently that hit home the need for rehabilitation options for drug users. The woman on the other end of the line wanted information about C.O.M.A., the recently formed group called Communities Overcoming Meth Abuse. She said she and her husband were meth addicts but that they wanted to quit.

KRAI’s Spring Expo, themed “Great Ideas for Home, Work and Play,” comes to Centennial Mall from noon to 7 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. Forty-five commercial and nonprofit vendors will fill the mall and promote spring activities available in the Yampa Valley. Attractions include weenie dog races at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, with registration at 9 a.m., and a performance by the 13-40 band from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday and one-hour shows at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Saturday. Food vendors also will be on site. There is limited space still available for vendors. Nonprofits can have a space at no charge. Call 824-6574 for more information.
