- On Saturday and Sunday, the Moffat County Fairgrounds in Craig will host the last fall rodeo of the 2004 High School Rodeo season. The National High School Rodeo Association is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the development of sportsmanship, horsemanship and character in the youth of our country. Saturday’s events are from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday’s events begin at 8 a.m. The high school contestants have an opportunity to receive college scholarships and assistance to attend college in addition to the titles and awards they can achieve in competition. Cowgirls compete in barrel racing, breakaway calf roping, goat tying, pole bending, queen contest and team roping. Cowboys compete in bareback riding, bull riding, calf roping, cattle cutting, saddle bronc riding, steer wrestling and team roping. This event is free to spectators and will not be canceled because of weather. Only lightning will delay events. Area students to watch are Becky White in the goat and pole events, Kendel Fawcett in the pole event, Brandon Whitaker and Clay Foulk in the calf roping and team roping events, Tia Branon in the goats and poles events, Sara Fleming in barrel and pole events, Shamra Simpson in the barrels and goat events and Sharina Simpson in the barrels and goats and poles events, Nicole Keen in barrels and pole events, Janice McIntyre in the barrel and pole events, Brandon McIntyre in the team roping event, Justin Hagwer in the saddle bronc event and Jaguar Terrill in team roping and calf roping events. Often, students competing have parents who are former competitors or still competing in rodeo events. High school participants face the same guidelines as other high school sports, and contestants must maintain their grades to compete. Many of the Moffat County High School contestants are honor roll students.
