The Serenity Prayer will be investigated during a sermon series by Pastor Dave Barnes at 10 a.m. Sunday at the First Congregational Church, 630 Green St. This Sunday's sermon will be "The courage to change things." After that are "The wisdom to distinguish" and "Living one day at a time." The Serenity Prayer, written in 1943 but never copyrighted, has been used by several organizations. However, usually only one-third of the prayer is used. Call 824-6836.
Entrepreneurial training offered for area veterans
The Veterans Corp., a federally funded, nonprofit organization, will host the Veterans Entrepreneurial Training program Sept. 25 at the University of Denver to help Rocky Mountain Veterans and members of the active duty military, National Guard and Reserve to start and expand small businesses.
The VET Program is a 40-hour comprehensive training program that offers two education tracks: New Venture, which is for individuals either contemplating a business venture or starting a new company, and Planning, which is for individuals who have been in business for a while. Both courses are sponsored by the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation,which is a philanthropy devoted to entrepreneurship. Upon successful course completion, Veteran graduates receive $675 in Gateway gift cards.
The Veterans Corporation provides the nation's 24 million veterans and service veterans with disabilities with the tools needed to start and expand small businesses with access to training, business markets, capital, service and networking. Boys and Girls Club resumes activities
After a successful summer program, the Boys and Girls Club of Craig will resume activities and programs for children 6 to 12 on Monday. Because of the renovations being done at the Boys and Girls Club building, programs will be offered at East Elementary School from 3 to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Parents are asked to arrange transportation for children to and from East Elementary. An after-school snack will be provided for the children.
"We're looking forward to working with our existing members and adding new members" said Jonathan Godes, executive director. Because the club will be serving just first- through fourth-graders, Godes urged parents of fifth- and sixth-graders to take advantage of the RAD after-school program being offered at Craig Intermediate School. RAD is scheduled to begin Sept. 27.
Godes said that renovations on the Boys and Girls Club building would be completed by early November. "Once we're in our building, we will serve children ages 6 through 18," he said.
Families of current members can expect to receive information from the club by the end of this week. Families interested in information regarding club memberships may e-mail bgcc@bresnan.net or call 826-0411. The annual membership fee is $10 a child and scholarships are available through the Chapman Automotive Scholarship Fund. New members' parents need to attend a club orientation within one month of member registration and all parents of current members need to attend an orientation before Oct. 20. Orientations will be at the Boys and Girls Club building,1324 E. U.S. Highway 40, every Tuesday at 6 p.m.
Craig Elks hosts 'Back
to the Future' dance
From 8 to 11 p.m. today, teens ages 12 to 18 are invited to a dance hosted by the Craig Elks at the Craig Elks lodge, 43 W. Victory Way. Enter from Victory Way and go upstairs. This is a come as you are dance with a "Back to the Future" theme. Eclipse with Bill Richards will provide the entertainment. The cost is $2 a person or $3 for two people. This is strictly a no alcohol, no smoking no drugs event. Call Robin at 824-0323.
