Police have arrested a Craig man on charges of enticement of a child and unlawful sexual contact.
Police arrested the 53-year-old man Thursday after the parent of an 11-year-old child reported the incident, Lt. John Forgay of the Craig Police Department said Tuesday.
The incident allegedly occurred Aug. 31 and was reported the following day.
The man has a criminal record in several states, Forgay said. Police here were familiar with the man, who has been in Craig for a few months, before the allegations, Forgay said. Police previously have responded to reports of suspicious behavior involving the man.
The man was found living in a trailer along Industrial Avenue, Forgay said.
"He's more a transient than anything," Forgay said.
After police interviewed the man, they took him in to custody Thursday.
Unlawful sexual contact is a misdemeanor offense and enticement of a child is a felony, Forgay said.
Thirty-two registered sex offenders live in Moffat County, Forgay said. Anyone with a sex crime on record must report the crime to police when they move.
"We think it's kind of high, but we don't have a true comparison," Forgay said of the number of sex offenders here.
A record of sex offenders is kept at the front office of the Craig Police Department.
Parents can check the book to see if they are living or moving next to a sex offender.
