Go above, beyond the expected

Name: Leigh Papierski
Name of Business/Address: Horses, Etc., 29 W. Victory Way, 824-RIDE (7433).

What prompted you to open your business in Craig? I saw a need for quality horse products at an affordable price. I also wanted to incorporate my own hobby into my line of work.

How did you get into your line of business?
I have been involved with horses my entire life and had worked in retail stores for many years, so I decided to combine the two.

Describe your philosophy of being a good businesswoman. Provide the best customer service you can, know your product and your customers and be willing to go above and beyond what is expected.

How do you define the role of your business in the community? Craig, as well as surrounding communities, has a very large horse population. There is a great opportunity to provide a much-needed product to those who participate in horse-related events including rodeo, horse shows, trail riding and other activities. As a local business, Horses, Etc. is able to support our youth in their horse endeavors.

What is the best part of your job?
Visiting with new and existing customers about a shared hobby. I also like seeing the latest products as they come out and being able to share them with my customers.

What is the most challenging part of your job? Combining reasonable prices and quality products to keep customers shopping here rather than in catalogs and on the Internet. The challenge lies in keeping customers returning to carry more and more merchandise while keeping prices low.

What advice would you give someone considering opening a business? Be patient. Owning a business takes hard work and doesn't happen overnight. Provide a good service and a quality product.
