Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints want to get area residents into the Christmas spirit.
Members of the Third Ward have planned an event for next week that assembles nativity scenes of various sizes and designs for the pubic to view.
"We just felt this would be a nice way to start the holiday season," organizer Coleen Fenton said.
She said the display will include more than 30 sets, including a plastic set one member played with as a child and a fancy one from Madagascar.
"There will be some big ones and some tiny ones," Fenton said.
This is the event's first year, and Fenton said she hopes it grows in popularity in coming years.
She got the idea from a Provo, Utah, group who did the same thing and had the event grow to a tradition year after year. Fenton hopes the event expands from filling part of one room to filling several rooms.
The nativity scenes will be set up from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday and Dec. 3 in Cultural Hall in the church, with entrance through the north door. The church is on the corner of Ninth Street and Finley Lane.
Fenton stressed that everyone is welcome to attend this free event, regardless of religion, Christian or not.
"The whole community is welcome and we'd like them to come," she said. "We would just appreciate if children come that parents come with them."
Those interested in having their nativity sets on display can call Fenton at 824-9638.
"I just think it's a neat way to start the season," she said, "and join together as a community in celebration of Christ's birth."
