Joshua Fleming once slept in a Target parking lot in Bakersfield, Calif., for one week to encourage listeners to donate to his radio station's food drive.
The disc jockey collected 9,530 pounds of food.
Now, as the program director at KRAI FM, he hopes to reproduce that success with the 93.7 and 102.3 KRAI Holiday Drive.
This year's holiday drive will be a two-day push at Centennial Mall from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Dec. 6 and 7 to collect food, clothing, toys and money for those in need in Moffat County.
"The gift of giving is truly what the season is about," Fleming said.
During the two-day drive, Fleming will broadcast his morning show, "The Breakfast Club," live from the parking lot of Centennial Mall, and his fellow disc jockeys will do the same for their shows.
Fleming is arranging for special guests, including national performance artists and well-known locals, to talk about the importance of giving during the holidays. He's hoping to get musical guests to perform, as well.
Victory Motors, Craig Ford, Cook Chevrolet and Steamboat Motors will provide new trucks to load the donations into and haul to the recipient organizations.
All of the donated items benefit Moffat County residents.
Donations will help the Interfaith Food Bank, Advocates Crisis Support Services, the Community Budget Center, Christmas For Kids, and Christmas For Seniors.
Some of the most important items people forget to donate are as simple as diapers, toothpaste, peanut butter and spaghetti sauce.
The drive has been reduced from five days to two to avoid drawing it out too much, Fleming said.
"I'm going to see whether the community can step up and do it in two days," Fleming said.
This is the first year former KRAI disc jockey Rick Allen hasn't run the holiday drive.
Allen created the drive, and under his direction, KRAI collected as much as 7 tons of food, 4 tons of clothing, hundreds of toys and $23,000 in cash.
Fleming said he'd work to give the drive its own identity while he directs it.
"I'm looking forward to a very successful year," Fleming said.
