Ninety-nine school groups sold something, provided a service, sponsored an event or requested donations in efforts to raise funds.
That, Superintendent Pete Bergmann said, may be getting out of hand.
"I don't feel like I'm following the policy of keeping fund-raisers to a minimum or keeping them limited," he said.
He asked School Board members Thursday night for some direction in retooling the district's policy on fund-raisers.
The policy allows fund-raisers with approval of the superintendent and states that they should be kept to a minimum.
But that's difficult, Bergmann said. The needs of the groups all seem important.
The concern is that the community may be feeling "tapped out" or over-solicited.
That, board member Steve Hafey said, isn't a problem.
"I think (fund raising) helps give our community ownership in the schools," he said. "I don't think anyone is offended by a fourth-grader trying to sell something. I think it's part of what makes Craig a community."
While working for Trapper Mine, Hafey said he was in charge of community contributions and never felt over-solicited.
Now as the director of human resources at the Craig Station power plant, he said there hasn't been a problem with the number of requests -- only the timing.
Opinions were mixed.
"Ideally, we want a service-oriented fund-raiser that is less directed and generates a decent amount of funds," Bergmann said.
Board member JoAnn Baxter was hesitant to limit the amount of opportunities students have to raise funds because she sees the process as a great learning experience.
"I wish we didn't have to do this (limit fund-raisers), but I can see where it may be a problem," she said.
Bergmann will look at the policy and attempt to outline fund-raiser limitations and categories.
Considerations will include the type of fund-raiser, the solicited party, the method of solicitation, whether the funds support a curricular or extra-curricular activity, the potential amount of funds raised and the number of fund-raisers per group.
