Permits to cut firewood and Christmas trees in the Routt National Forest are available at the Forest Service Visitor Center, 925 Weiss Drive in Steamboat. Firewood permits are $20 and allow up to two cords of fuel to be gathered. Multiple permits may be purchased. It is necessary to have a permit card for every pickup or trailer load of wood removed from the national forest. Christmas tree permits are $10 and allow for one tree. A household may buy up to five permits and may only use the trees for personal use. Trees cannot be bought and resold.
