MEEKER -- The Meeker Historical Society is soliciting entries for an art contest that will be used to help raise money for renovations at the White River Museum.
Boots Campbell, fund-raising organizer, said it seemed a perfect venue for local artists to get some exposure as well as a fun, different kind of way to raise money for the Historical Society.
"We have tons of projects on the agenda for the museum and they all take money," Campbell said.
The museum has plans to expand and continue renovation on the Garrison Building.
Steve Wix, president of the Historical Society, Dale Hallabach, photography instructor at Colorado Northwest Community College and Andy Goettel, Meeker High School art teacher, will be the judging panel. Once the winners are chosen in different categories, the art will be auctioned off to raise funds for the museum.
Sponsored by the Meeker Historical Society, the art auction will be part of the Range Call Fourth of July weekend celebrations.
The contest is for art and photography and judging will be held July 3. The contest is open to all ages. First- ,second- and third-place works of art in the adult and high school art and photography categories will be auctioned during the Methodist Church barbecue in City Park. Bryce Purkey is the auctioneer.
All other high school and pre-high school entries will be sold in a silent auction while on display at Fawn Creek Gallery before the live auction.
First-, second- and third-place prizes will be awarded in "Meeker Bucks" and range from $10 to $55.
Entries are due by June 21 and will be displayed at Fawn Creek Gallery beginning June 25. There is no entry fee and donations are tax deductible. Mediums include, but are not limited to, pencil, pen and ink, oil and watercolor.
Photography will be a separate division. Entries do no have to be framed but do need to be matted and shrink wrapped. Artists must provide a brief autobiography. Entry forms are available at Fawn Creek Gallery or can be downloaded from the Meeker Web site at www.townofmeeker.org.
