In Friday's dual swim meet against Glenwood, Moffat County's Chris Compton was literally his own toughest competition.
"The toughest time to swim is when it's by yourself," the junior said. "You don't have anybody to pace off of and it's easy to lose focus."
Compton competed alone in the 200-meter medley, as did Moffat County sophomore Robert McClellan in the 500 freestyle. To make things tougher for Compton, he was recovering from a case of food poisoning contracted Thursday.
"I didn't feel like myself for much of the meet," he said. "Yesterday I was pretty sick so it drained me."
He still had enough strength to win the backstroke and came within a second of qualifying for state in the 100 backstroke. He swam the backstroke in the 200 medley relay and -- along with Zach Vorhies, Nick Ruckman and Blake Worsley -- the Bulldogs earned their first state qualification.
"It's nice to have the medley qualified now because it gives me more options for that relay the rest of the year," coach Jim Vorhies said. "We can fit whoever we want into it."
With only 10 swimmers on the team, Vorhies is hoping to get as much experience as he can for everybody. The next relay that he thinks can qualify is the 400 freestyle.
"We really haven't been able to get after it in practice yet," he said. "So I expect the times to drop soon."
Believe it or not, the Bulldogs had more "depth" than Glenwood, who only brought five swimmers. That resulted in a 68-49 win for the home team.
"It was icing on the cake to get the win," Vorhies said. "We probably won't be in that situation a lot."
Other top-three finishes for the Bulldogs were: David McClellan, 2nd, 200 freestyle; Blake Worsley, 1st, 50 freestyle and 2nd, 100 freestyle; Nick Ruckman, 2nd, 50 freestyle and 2nd, 100 butterfly; Zach Vorhies, 3rd, 50 freestyle and 2nd, 100 breaststroke; David McClellan, Shayne Dodge, Devin Gillette, Robert McClellan, 2nd, 200 freestyle relay and Worsley, Compton, Ruckman, Vorhies placed in the top three in the 400 freestyle.
