Walter Absher Curtis died in Reno, Nev., June 5. He was 86.
Curtis was born Jan. 6, 1918, to Archie and Minnie Curtis at Pyramid Peak.
Curtis graduated from Steamboat Springs High School. He attended the University of Colorado for a short period of time, but had to return home because of his father's illness. Curtis met Chloriene Emmerson of Mountain Grove, Mo. They were married on Oct. 24, 1940.
They had a daughter, Karen and three sons, Walter Jr., Brent, and Lynn.
About 1942, they moved to the Morrison Creek area south of Steamboat Springs. They started sheep ranching and later expanded with a winter range in the Browns Park area in northwest Moffat County.
In 1964, the sheep and Morrison Creek ranch was sold. They raised cattle on the Browns Park ranch until the late 1960s when the ranch and cattle were sold. After that they moved to east Texas for a brief period of time. They moved on to Nevada and over the years he worked for their two oldest sons who each own contracting businesses.
During their retirement years, they loved traveling in their motor home. You could find them anywhere that the weather was between 70 and 80 degrees. Most of their winters were spent in the Laughlin, Nev., area.
Walt loved watching his children and grandchildren grow, change and develop. He loved talking to people and was able to strike up a conversation with almost anyone -- anywhere.
He loved working outdoors with livestock and ranch work. He always had fond memories of the mountains at the Morrison Creek ranch.
Curtis is survived by his wife of 63 years, Chloriene of Winnemucca. Nev.; sons Walter Jr. (Sheryl) of Winnemucca, Brent (Jeanne) of Smith Valley, Nev., and Lynn (Ella) of Craig; a brother, Howard of Oregon; grandchildren Shawn (Kori) Curtis of Texas, Bryan (Rose) Curtis of Nevada, Donna (Tim) Gelinas of Washington, Joel (Patricia) Waterhouse of Florida, Roy (Michelle) Waterhouse of Ohio, Lora (Don) Degagne of Florida, Doug Curtis of Nevada, David (Danille) Curtis of Nevada, and Tanya (George) Streeter of Nevada; and 21 great-grandchildren.
