Name: Clem Mascarenas
Occupation: Safeway produce manager
When and why did you move to Craig?
I was born in 1949 in Craig. I am a Craig native and one of five children -- all of us still live here in Craig. I graduated from Moffat County High School in 1968 and many in my graduation class still live here.
Who is your favorite political figure and why?
President Bush is my favorite political figure. Having a Christian president is fantastic. I would just ask people to pray for Bush. We are very blessed in this country and in Craig, in particular, to be so apart of the type of conflict in the world. We need to be thankful, of course, but compassionate to the suffering of others in our world.
Who is your hero and why?
My hero is any Christian who stands up for their beliefs; who isn't afraid of being labeled a Christian. It takes a lot to stand up for your beliefs.
Most rewarding part of living in Moffat County?
I was not very good in school but through my participation in my church, I have come to discover many things that I enjoy doing that I never thought I would. The church has allowed me to be part of the singing, which I really enjoy but would have never realized I could do. I also am a speaker in the church and teach a Bible class. I have grown so much in the church.
What's the one thing you would change about Moffat County if you could?
I am very concerned about the drugs in our community. The drug system has been in the news a lot recently. I would really like to see programs established to give the kids alternatives and tools they could use to resist the temptation to go along with the crowd, that would educate them on the dangers, too. Something like an active drug and alcohol 12-step program for the kids. We can't let go of our kids. They are everything, our futures and our lives.
What's the one thing about Moffat County that you hope never changes?
I hope we never become like a big city. I like to smile and say hi to people and they reply hi back. I like to honk at friends I pass. People stop and ask each other, sincerely, how they are doing. The Twin Towers, on Sept. 11, 2001, broke down the walls between people all through this country but now they seem to be coming right back. Here in this town, we are like this every day.
Favorite food?
I tell my doctor the "CC's" keep me going: Coca-Cola and a candy bar, usually Snickers.
Favorite book?
The Holy Bible. The only book I know that you can read over and over again and understand something different each time. The only book I know you can share with people and give them wisdom or comfort by just going to it.
Favorite band/singer?
I like the Christian group, "Mercy Me." My favorite songs are "God Speaks" and "I Only Imagine."
Favorite pet?
I have a little dog named Zip. He's my buddy. He is always energetic, and he is very pushy when he wants your attention.
Favorite vacation spot?
I like the Vail area. The church goes with a group for several days and it is just a nice area.
Favorite activity in Craig?
I just love talking with people, sharing my faith and learning their stories.
