Rosetta Harper: 1907-2004


Rosetta Harper, a former Craig resident, died July 25, 2004, in Meeker, Colo. She was 97.

Mrs. Harper was born May 25, 1907, the youngest of 11 children born to John Wesley and Melissa Jane (Eoff) Morgan.

Mrs. Harper's parents were married Feb. 14, 1884, in Newton County, Mo. Her father was a farmer, and her mother was a midwife who rode horseback to attend her patients. Her siblings were Gertie, Jack, John, Marguerite, Mary, Florence, Melissa, Nellie, Ruby, Susie, William, and Samuel. The family lived in Neosho, Mo.

Mrs. Harper played basketball in high school and earned her certificate as a school teacher.

She married Ralph L. Harper on Dec. 24, 1926 in Neosho. Their three children, Barbara June, Lloyd Ralph, and Jerry Lee were born in Lanagan, Mo.

After Barbara June died at age 4 from typhoid fever, the family moved to Comanche County, Okla., where they farmed until Ralph's death in 1966.

Mrs. Harper continued to live on the farm for several more years. She sold the farm and moved to Sterling, Okla., in about 1974.

In 1991, Mrs. Harper moved to Craig, where she lived until June of 2004.

Mrs. Harper enjoyed sewing, traveling, fishing, playing cards, crossword puzzles and socializing with family and friends. She was a lifelong member of the Baptist Church. She served the church in many ways during her life.

Mrs. Harper is survived by a son, Jerry Lee Harper (Jeanette), Craig; a daughter-in-law Caroline (Tackett) Harper (Lloyd), Cameron, Okla.; seven grandchildren, Deborah Harper and Rebecca Harper, both of Norman, Okla., Kathleen Harper, Everett, Wash., Suzanne Burns (Bill), Wesley Harper, Cynthia (Andy) Chotvacs, and John Ralph (Marsey) Harper, all of Craig; four great-grandchildren, Katherine Smith, Fayetteville, N.C., Cristen Smith, Bryon Smith, and Janis Harper, all of Craig; a niece, Genevie Stell, Owasso, Okla.; a nephew, Charles Reed, of Washington state; and several nieces and nephews.

Harper was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers and sisters, her daughter, Barbara June, her husband, Ralph, and her son, Lloyd.
