The soccer season is year-round for the Moffat County High School boys soccer team.
Six athletes and coach Jeff Hammond traveled to Laramie, Wyo. for the Laramie County Community College Presidents Day futsol tournament.
"They started out a little rusty," Hammond said. "But after a half of playing together the team started to gel."
Futsol is a version of indoor soccer with a smaller, weighted ball on a smaller indoor field. With a smaller ball the game hones the ball handling skills for players.
"This is great practice for the guys to improve for the fall season," Hammond said.
The team lost its first match 4-3 by giving up three goals in the first half. After getting a feel for each other, the Craig teammates won their next three games: 5-2 versus Rock Springs, 7-3 against Gering, Neb., and 2-1 against Natrona, Wyo. The 3-1 record moved the team into the final four Sunday.
The win streak stopped in the first round of the semifinals with a 2-0 loss to East Cheyenne, the eventual champions.
Hammond's team of Marcos Quezada, Hugo Quezada, Derrick Thompson, Alberto Oliveras, Schuyler Hammond and Rowan Dubois won its last game 11-3 against Scotts Bluff, Neb.
"It was fun to see the guys comes together during the tournament," Hammond said. "We have a nice core of talent returning for next year."
