Ertha "E.K." Callaway died Sunday, Feb. 8, 2004 at his home in Craig. He was 94.
Ertha was born at Fort Chad-bourne, Texas on Sept. 2, 1909, the fourth of five children, to Boon B. and Margaret Frances (Lasswell) Call-away. The family homesteaded at Spring Creek north of Maybell in 1917 and later in Browns Park and on Cold Springs Mountain.
On May 8, 1937, he married Twilla Christensen and to this union one son and four daughters were born. They worked at their farm outside Maybell hauling hay, egg farming and working at the uranium mill. In 1966, he started working in maintenance at The Memorial Hospital in Craig. Twilla died on Jan. 26, 1971.
On March 18, 1972, E.K. married Ethel Simon Gates who also worked at the Craig hospital. They both worked there until they retired in 1980.
E.K. was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers Richard and Otho, one sister Mattie Taylor, a son Leo and a daughter Eva.
Ertha is survived by three daughters, Deonna Ainslie of Arvada, Colo., Josephine Freestone of Clifton, Colo., and Crystal Stewart of Savannah, Mo.; four stepsons, Gene Gates of Arvada, Roy Gates of Montclair, Calif.., Joe Gates of Craig and John Gates of Red Feather Lakes, Colo.; 29 grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren, nephews and nieces; and sister Betty Stewart of Renton, Wash.
Memorial services will be held in June.
