The first day of the Moffat County fair got off to a start Friday with an impressive turnout at the Fashion Revue and skillful equestrian displays at the Open Horse Show -- English division.

The latest styles of handcrafted attire by Moffat County youths filled the fairgrounds pavilion Friday.

Each of the 12 contestants modeled their articles of self-made clothing, while 4-H agent Nate Balstad recited commentary written by each designer.

Everything from Indian-inspired apparel to beach-ready outfits were modeled with attitude and accessorized with tote bags, jewelry and sunglasses.

"It took a lot of work, but it was fun," said first-year contestant Taylor Vernon, who made her own skirt and bag.

Families snapped photos and clapped for their fashion-designers-to-be.

The number of Fashion Revue contestants doubled from the previous year, and Balstad attributed the increase to the adult leaders who volunteered time to work with the kids.

The "Decorate Your Duds" 4-H class, led by Sewing Guild members Patty Askew, Ann Dodd, Pat Pearce and Jean Jones, focused on decorating everyday clothes.

"The best part for the kids was their being able to do their own design," Askew said.

The winners will be announced at 7 p.m Tuesday night.

The Open Horse Show -- English division offered horse-lovers a chance to watch the massive animals and their partners in action Friday evening.

Mary and Stan Martinez organized this year's Open Horse Show.

Mary said the turnout pleased her.

Competition aside, "the best part is just seeing all the kids," she said.
