Beefsteak fire active

over the weekend

The Beefsteak fire, which started July 24, has grown to 230 acres. The fire is located in Beefsteak Gulch on Bureau of Land Management public land 12 miles west of Meeker in the Black Mountain Wilderness Study Area.

Beefsteak continues to move north in heavy, dense, dead and down (on the ground) pinion, juniper and mountain brush. According to the bureau, the fire is being managed as a use fire for multiple resource benefits. This fire will clean up and remove the build up of dead debris and encourage the regeneration of various brush.

In order to monitor any impacts from smoke, a Data Ram unit has been set up. This unit measures particulate matter in the air. The readings show the particulate levels to be within acceptable standards. The haze in the area over the weekend most likely was due to a combination of large fires in Utah mixing with the Beefsteak fire.
