Mary Jane Montoya used to enjoy playing golf with her friend, Arlene Roth.

"We just had fun together," Montoya reminisced.

Roth died of cancer a few years ago, but Montoya keeps her in mind, golfing in her memory each year during the Rally for a Cure golf tournament.

Today is the last day to sign up for the annual fund-raising golf tournament that tees off Wednesday at the Yampa Valley Golf Course, coordinator Susan Utzinger said. The event has a $35 entry fee and raises money for the Susan G. Koman Breast Cancer Foundation and the Moffat County Cancer Society.

"Everyone knows someone who has been affected by cancer," she said. "We've had several of our members (on the Yampa Valley Ladies Golf Association) who have died from cancer or who are cancer survivors."

Women of all skill levels are encouraged to golf in the tournament, Utzinger said. Teams are comprised of players with mixed abilities and the golf scramble allows women "to just go and have a good time."

Prizes will be awarded for a number of feats and a drawing will be offered.

A luncheon will follow the tournament, after which the group will send off pink balloons as a gesture to cancer victims and survivors, Utzinger said.

"Everybody goes away with something," she said. "We really have a nice time. It's just a fun event."

In its fifth year, the tournament is growing in popularity. Last year, 35 women participated in the event but registered golfers already have exceeded that number this year. That means more ladies who dress in different shades of pink will dominate the golf course, Utzinger said.

"When you go into the Tin Cup after the tournament, it's all in pink," she said. "It's something women look forward to all year long."
