Get involved in the 2004 Moffat County Fair by volunteering your time as a superintendent on Aug. 11.

Help is being sought for assistance to judges in the areas of art, crafts and hobbies, homemade wines and beers, quilting, clothing, food preservation, photography, breads, cakes, cookies, candies, leathercraft, needlework, and horticulture. This is a fun way to learn more about various crafts and hobbies while helping as the exhibits are being judged.

If interested, call Elisa at the CSU Moffat County Cooperative Extension Office, 824-9180. No experience is necessary.

"Out of this World" dance scheduled for Saturday

Craig Elks will present the first "Out of the World" dance for ages 14 to 18 from 8 to 11 p.m. Saturday at the Craig Elks Lodge, 43 W. Victory Way.

Cost will be $3 for two people or $2 per person. Door prizes will be awarded. Attire will be come-as-you-are, although proper attire discretion is advised. Call Robin at 824-0323.

Women's Christian Conference coming

A Christian conference for women will bring a keynote speaker from Kentucky to Craig next month.

Twenty-five women from various churches have worked on a committee to sponsor this conference for women from Craig and Northwest Colorado. The conference, which includes 12 workshops, begins with registration at 6 p.m. Sept. 10 and will run through Sept. 11 at First Christian Church, 960 W. Victory Way. Lunch will be provided.

The scheduled speaker will be Betty B. Gray from Kentucky, who is known for her humorous, down-to-earth, spirit-filled messages. Music and praise will be provided by Rhonda Walmer, a Craig native who now lives in Orlando, Fla. Various vocalists from the Craig and Grand Junction areas will present special music. The event is limited to 300 participants so register early. Registration fees will be $15 for Sept. 10 only, $30 for Sept. 11 only or $35 for both if you register before Aug. 20.

After Aug. 20, registration fees will be $20 for Sept. 10, $40 for Sept. 11 or $45 for both days. For teens ages 13 through 17, registration fees will be $10 for Sept. 10 only, $15 for Sept. 11 only or $20 for both days.

Sheep dog trials

will be held Sept. 8-12

Meeker will showcase 150 top dog/handler teams next month competing for a $15,000 purse.

The 18th annual Meeker Classic Sheepdog Championship Trials, scheduled Sept. 8-12, is considered one of the most prestigious traditional sheep-herding events in North America.

The volunteer-hosted event is held in the White River Valley at the foot of the Flat Tops Wilderness Area and is expected to draw more than 15,000 spectators. During the five-day trials, there is plenty for spectators to do on-site and off. Activities include a craft festival, art contest and sale, barbecues, pancake breakfasts, jackpot stock dog competition and more.Call (970) 878-5845.

Children's Literacy Festival is Thursday

Moffat County Libraries Craig branch will sponsor a Children's Literacy Festivalfrom 2 until 4 p.m. Thursday at 570 Green St.

The library will be closed at noon to prepare for the festival and patrons will not be able to check out materials during the festival. However, many other services will be available.

The festival will include activity booths that feature puppet shows, story-telling, face-painting and science invention projects. There also will be informational booths such as gun safety, therapy dogs and sign language. Call 824-5116.

Realtors giving away

$5,000 to buy home

The Craig Association of Realtors is giving up to $5,000 toward the purchase of a first home. If you are a Colorado resident, earn $38,900 family income or less and are purchasing a home in the Craig area, then you could be eligible to win.

This contest uses funds collected by the Colorado Association of Realtors' Housing Opportunity Foundation. The Craig Association of Realtors is a real estate trade organization representing more than 25 members. The association supports private property rights and equal housing opportunities. CARHOF is a charitable foundation designed to provide funding for affordable housing projects across the state.

seminar set in Craig

A free Health and Wellness seminar will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Holiday Inn in Craig. Key speakers will be Ken Matthews of Interlachen, Fla., Bill Soper of Craig and Kara Grunwalk of Craig.

Parks and Rec

hosting football league

The Doak Walker Tackle Football League, which begins this month, is hosted by the Craig Parks and Recreation Department for girls and boys in third through sixth grade. Volunteer coaches are needed for this program and are required to attend a mandatory coaches clinic Aug. 10 at 6 p.m.

All participants are required to attend practice at Woodbury Field at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday. The cost is $40 to attend and registration deadline is July 30. Call 826-2004.

Tribute to those serving overseas in September

Names of people who are serving or have died in action in Iraq and Afghanistan are being collected for a tribute at the "Wings and Wheels in the 'Boat," a Labor Day celebration at Steamboat Springs Airport.

Residents of Northwest Colorado should send information about relatives, friends or others serving overseas for a tribute at 11:30 a.m. Saturday during Labor Day weekend. Photos and information about those serving abroad will be displayed on a bulletin board while the tribute takes place. There may be a military flyover.
