Clifton, Colo. resident Fredric Eugene "Gene" Whicker, died Sept. 15, 2003, at his home, after a battle with lung cancer. He was 92.

Whicker was born June 16, 1911 in Rathbun, Iowa, to Harlan Lester and Emma Oretta Boyer Whicker, just a few minutes before his sister, Florence Irene.

Whicker spent a happy childhood with his six brothers and sisters around Centerville, Moravia, and Unionville, and Boston, Jasper, and Lamar, Mo. As a young man, he came to Moffat County with his parents because of his mother's ill health.

In 1938, he convinced Josephine Hebbert to come from Bolivar, and be his bride. They were married May 5, and spent 65 years together. They had a son, Raymond, a daughter, Nellie Josephine (who died at four days old), and a daughter, Roberta.

They lived at Lay, Colo., (west of Craig) for 38 years while he was employed as a coal miner, a truck driver, and a mechanic; Gene and Josephine had a filling station for several years. He retired to Clifton in 1977, where he spent a lot of time doing yard work and gardening, and tinkering with cars and lawnmowers for the neighbors.

Whicker enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, and puttering. He had a good sense of humor and enjoyed telling stories about some of the adventures he and his brothers and sisters had while they were growing up. He was a wonderful son, husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend.

Whicker is survived by his wife of 65 years, Josephine, of Clifton; son Raymond Whicker, of Baggs, Wyo.; daughter, Roberta Wilson, of Clifton; six grandsons Ray Whicker, Jr., of Seeley Lake, Mont., Glenn Whicker, of Farson, Richard Whicker, of Baggs, Robert Wilson, of Cedaredge, John Wilson, of Grand Junction, and Jim Wilson, of Craig; 15 great-grandchildren; his oldest sister, Nellie Heckman, of Omaha, Neb., who is 102; and his twin sister, Irene DeLambert, of Wamsutter; and many nieces and nephews.

Whicker was preceded in death by his parents, Harlan Lester Whicker and Emma Oretta Boyer Whicker; older twins, Fern and Forrest; brothers Ben, Glenn, and Ralph; sister, Sylvia; and daughter, Nellie Josephine.
