Raymond M. Knez


Craig resident, Raymond M. Knez, died Nov. 15, 2003, at his home. He was 84.

Knez was born Dec. 1, 1918 in Craig, to Joseph and Marie (Mahowald) Knez.

Knez was raised and attended school in Craig. He married Grace Beal in 1938, in Craig, and to this union five children were born. He worked as a coal miner and farmer until he was forty and then became a general contractor, building many homes in the area. Following his wife's death in 1956, he married Helen Garcia on Oct. 31, 1959 in Denver, and to this union three children were born. He also had two stepchildren from this marriage. Knez was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, former member of the Elks Lodge and a board member of the Church Credit Union. He enjoyed camping, fishing, and especially working on cars.

Knez is survived by his wife, Helen Knez, of Craig; children Ramona Mamani, of Lakewood, Lewis Knez, of Craig, Pete Garcia, of Taos, N.M., Lorraine Knez, of Lakewood, Loretta Gaugh, of Lakewood, Madeline Bingham, of Scottsdale, Ariz., Gregory Knez, of Craig, Rosalyn Desmarais, of Lakewood, and Jacqueline Knez, of Lakewood; thirty-one grandchildren; numerous great- and great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Louise Fedinec, of Craig.

Knez was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Marie, brothers Joseph and Antone, a son, Fred, and a half sister, Roselin.

Rosary was Nov. 18, 2003.

Mass was Nov. 19, 2003, at St. Michael's Church with Fr. Ernest Bayer and Fr. Roger Lascelle officiating. The organist was Anne Carr and the soloist was Joyce Miller. Selections were "Prayer Of St. Francis Of Assisi", "One Day At A Time", "Why Me Lord", and "Amazing Graze".

Pallbearers were his grandchildren.

Interment was at Craig Cemetery.
