Two consecutive losses wasn't the way the Moffat County High School football team wanted the regular season to end, but what matters now is that it is in the playoffs.
"Everybody is 0-0 now," coach Kip Hafey said. "Every team is good so we have a reality check now."
The 20-15 loss Friday to Palisade set Moffat County as the third-place team in the Western Slope Conference. The draw in the first round for the 7-3 Bulldogs is Berthoud of the Tri-Valley Conference. Berthoud, 6-4, finished in a three-way tie for second in the league but won the tiebreaker with Sterling and Windsor to earn second place.
With those results, 10th-ranked Moffat County will travel to unranked Berthoud for a 1 p.m. game Saturday.
The Bulldogs are in a similar situation as they were last year as the third seed in the WSC going on the road to face a second seed from another conference.
"I think we are a more experienced team this year," Hafey said. "Our goal is to take the program to the next level with at least one playoff win."
Although the coaching staff had not received a tape of its next opponent as of Sunday, they do have some early ways to be familiar with Berthoud.
Berthoud has two common opponents with the Bulldogs. It lost to Steamboat Springs in its third game of the season, 7-20, and defeated Fort Morgan, 7-6. The Bulldogs lost to the Sailors, 22-12, and defeated Fort Morgan 42-12.
Berthoud has also lost its last two games of the regular season as did the Bulldogs.
"For us to continue we need to play both halves well, which we haven't done for while," Hafey said. "We haven't come out and played well in the first half or we might be undefeated."
While the Bulldogs are preparing for Berthoud, three other Western Slope schools are gearing up for the post season. Palisade, the conference winner, hosts Rifle, the only team to beat Palisade this year. Rifle earned the wild card spot in the playoffs and this was the year that the Western Slope top seed played the wild card. Steamboat, the second seed from the WSC, will host Sterling, the third seed from the Tri-Valley league. All games are Saturday.
