Marguerite N. Velasquez


Hayden resident Marguerite N. Velasquez died April 18, 2003, at the Doak Walker Care Center in Steamboat Springs. She was 86.

Velasquez was born Jan. 12, 1917, in Mt. Harris, Colo., to William and Mabel (Warren) Hayes. She was raised and attended school in Mt. Harris and Hayden. In 1935, she married Wilbur Velasquez in Craig.

Following their marriage, the couple lived in various places including Pieance Creek, Washington, California, Vernal, Utah, and Hayden. Velasquez worked as a cook in hospitals and nursing homes. In later years, she was kept busy raising her large family.

She was a member of the Rebekah Lodge in Hayden and enjoyed camping, fishing, dancing, crafts and crocheting.

Velasquez is survived by her daughters Donna Gregory and Terrie (Roger) Walker, of Hayden; sons Robert (Jean) Hayes, of Hayden, Vernon Velasquez, of Grand Junction, Colo., Gary (Linda) Velasquez, of Longmont, Colo., and Tommy (Lynna) Velasquez, of Maybell, Colo.; 21 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; sisters Coleen Kowach, of Silverlake, Kan., and Kathleen Frasier, of Missouri; and brothers Bill Hayes, of Craig; Larry Hayes, of Grand Junction; Jay, Dennis and Mickey Hayes, of Hayden and John Hayes, of Wheatland, Wyo.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers Warren, Howard, Calvin, Jimmy and Myron; sister, Sylvia; husband, Wilbur; sons Howard and Monty; and daughters Barbara and Sheila.

Services were April 24, 2003, at Hayden Congregational Church with Doug Zirkle officiating. The organist was Avis Funk with Betty Barnes as the soloist.

Selections were "Amazing Grace," "Peace in the Valley" and "Just a Rose Will Do."

Pallbearers were her grandsons and honorary pallbearers were all her many friends.

Interment was at Hayden Cemetery.
