Craig resident Brendan Harper died Jan. 8, 2003, at The Memorial Hospital. He was 21.
Harper was born on March 20, 1981, in Grand Junction, Colo., to Gary and Sheila (Merrick) Harper. He was raised and attended school in Craig, graduating from Moffat County High School in 2000. He was very active in Special Olympics, participating in bowling, swimming and track.
In middle school, he was the mascot of the eighth-grade football team and in high school he was the mascot of the girls' basketball team and led them out at home games. For the past seven years, he was a member of the Craig Police Explorer Post. He enjoyed riding with the officers and taking calls with the dispatchers and he always listened to his scanner to keep up with the various officers.
At home, Harper enjoyed playing video games and listening to country music, especially Leanne Rimes. One of his favorite experiences was meeting Rimes backstage before her concert at the Colorado State Fair.
Harper is survived by his parents, Gary and Sheila Harper, of Craig; his sister, Adrienne Burch, and her husband, Cody, also of Craig; his brother, Aric Harper, and his fiancee, Wenona Watson, both of Craig; his grandparents, Emily Harper of Lebanon, Ore., and Ray and Dolores Merrick of Corpus Christi, Texas. He is also survived by numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, a niece and a nephew.
Services were Jan. 11, 2003, at First Christian Church with Al Cashion officiating.
The selection was "One More Day."
Pallbearers were Marvin Cameron, Bryan Gonzales, travis Young, Brian Soper, Carolyn Wade and Larry Mullen.
Interment was at Craig Cemetery with Tim Osborne officiating.
