Swimmers get more familiar with Glenwood

The Moffat County High School swim team is starting to become familiar with its Glenwood Springs counter part. Including last weekend's double dual against Glenwood and Delta, the Bulldogs have swam against the Demons in all four meets of the season.

"No one wants to swim against them and get beat," said coach Ed Stehlin. "But I welcome it because how are you going to get better if you don't have tough competition?"

Despite a week away from the pool over Christmas break, the Bulldog swimmers continued to improve with 26 personal bests at the meet in Delta.

"I opened up the pool after the week off and had 13 girls come and swim," Stehlin said. "You can go down the results and see which ones were at the pool over break by the performances."

The 200-medley relay team of senior Nicole Vorhies, sophomore Danyel Harmon and seniors Chloe Gilchrist and Miranda Hillewaert improved on its state qualifying time to 2:05.2 and also won the competition.

Whiting also qualified individually in the 100-breast stroke with a first-place time of 1:13.

Hillewaert continues to narrow down her 50 freestyle time and came within eight tenths of a second to qualifying for state with a second place performance. Harmon was four tenths behind her teammate for a third-place finish.

Other second place finishes for the Bulldogs were turned in by sophomore Sari Maneotis in the 100 butterfly and the 200 freestyle relay of Whiting, Hillewaert, senior Cara Conci and Harmon.

Diver Amanda Vaughn finished third in the competition behind two Demon divers who have already qualified for state.

Stehlin said he also was impressed with Gilchrist and senior Jada Hastings in the 500 freestyle as they finished third and fourth respectively.

All three teams competed at the same time but the meet was scored as a double dual. The Bulldogs defeated Delta, 165-113, and lost to the Demons, 163-119.

Once again the Bulldogs will swim against the Demons this weekend at the natatorium in MCHS Saturday.

"We're really preparing for the big meet during the season, which is the Jeffco the week after next," Stehlin said.

"But why not take on Glenwood one more time? They can only make us better."
