Craig resident Gus Charchalis died Jan. 30, 2003, at The Memorial Hospital. He was 87.
Charchalis was born Feb. 2, 1916, in Pyra, Greece, to John and Lemonia (Skouras) Charchalis. He was raised in Greece where he graduated from high school. He joined his father in Moffat County in 1936.
Charchalis served in the U.S. Army during WWII on the Pacific Front and was honorably discharged in 1945. He married Dimitra Athanasiou in Lamia, Greece on Feb.16, 1947.
Charchalis and his family operated a sheep ranch, which was later converted to a wheat farm. He was a member of the Elks Lodge, the VFW, the Roumelotian Club, and St. John's Greek Orthodox Church. He enjoyed traditional Greek dancing, hunting, farming and ranching, traveling and spending time with friends and family.
Charchalis is survived by his wife, Dimitra; daughter, Lillian (Leo) Palmos; sons, John (Ann) Charchalis, and Nick (Ann) Charchalis; grandchildren, Roula, Terry, Demitra, Deno, Audrey Anna, Mike, Dimitra, and Angela.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, Chris and Peter Charchalis.
Services were Feb. 3, 2003, at St John's Greek Orthodox Church with Fr. Makarios officiating.
Interment was at Craig Cemetery.
