It is important to establish a routine for children before school starts so that starting school is not as difficult for them.

Diana Cook, principal of East Elementary School, recommends that parents start putting their children to bed earlier at least the week before school starts.

"Getting back to a schedule of going to bed and getting up at the same time (is important to start the week before school)," Cook said. "Also starting to have breakfast at the same time every morning is good."

Also important is giving the child a feeling of comfort about the new routine.

If the child is walking to school, take the route with him at least once and point out where the crossing guards will be. Emphasize using the sidewalk at all times.

"Practice (how the child is getting to school) a couple of times ," said Julie Baker, principal of Ridgeview Elementary. "So it is not such an intimidating, huge task for the child."

Another important step is to review with children how to behave on a bus and what to do if anyone bothers them. Make certain children know where to get on and off the bus.

Eating a good breakfast also is important, said Baker, because then the child's energy level will be sustained until lunch.

Acknowledge and empathize with the mixed emotions your child may be experiencing at the beginning of school.

"Review safety tips," Baker said, "such as not talking to strangers and looking both ways before the child crosses the street."
