An organized chaos is what the swine show looks like, said swine judge Brett Kaysen.
The show, which featured showmanship and market swine competitions, took place Thursday at the Moffat County Fair.
Brothers Blake and Blaine Kawcak competed against each other in the swine show.
"It's a little bit hard," Blaine said of going up against his family.
Blake has been showing for three years and this was Blaine's first year. Blake placed one and Blaine two in their showmanship category. But Blaine won grand champion market swine at the end of the night with his pig.
"The enjoyment of it, they're not a lot of work," Blake said of why he likes show pigs.
Justin Hadden, 13, said that washing the pigs is the worst part of raising and showing them.
"You always have to keep your eye on the judge," said Tal Peirce on the challenges of showing a swine.
Colby Hadden, 9, won first in the junior showmanship category with his York pig, Ghoster. Getting first in class is Hadden's favorite part of showing swine.
"I just like watching my friends show the steers," Hadden said of his favorite part of going to the fair.
Dustin Camp, 12, trains his pig 30 minutes a day and looks forward to the day when he can sell it at the fair.
Kaysen started judging livestock shows when he was 18 years old, now he is a 29-year-old instructor at Colorado State University where he teaches swine production and livestock evaluation.
"Work extremely hard and do it with enthusiasm," Kaysen said of what it takes to raise good swine.
Attributes that Kaysen looks for in good swine are:
- muscle, swine are raised for meat
- they also have to be lean so that there is more meat and less fat
- the swine should have some ring appeal or attractiveness
The swine show was a draw for the community, which gave Kaysen several loud periods of applause for comments about the "quality of the young people in Craig" and the quality of swine entered in the show.
"It's the kids. That's what makes it fun," Kaysen said.
