4-H members got a chance to show off their dogs and the training they had accomplished with their furry friends at the 4-H dog show Tuesday.

The Moffat County Fair dog show, which was held on the fair ground lawn and lasted about four hours, was open to all breeds and ages. The judge scored each dog on each of the exercises and the scores were totaled to come up with the grand champion.

Participants had to complete a record book of their training with the dogs.

Lindsey Yoast and her female Pembroke Welsh Corgie, Annie, went through the many skill-testing activities during the clear blue-sky day.

"I like dog shows because she is happy doing it and so am I,"

Yoast said.

Yoast said she trains Annie for about 10 minutes a day and said that Annie was originally trained with food.

"Corgie's are very smart herding dogs," Yoast said.

Along with the 4-H dog show, Yoast participates in agility tests with Annie.

"As a puppy, we needed her trained, so I took the (training) class and then I took 4-H," Yoast said.

Yoast has been in 4-H for two and a half years and this is her second fair. She also does leathercraft.

"The hardest part is obedience," Yoast said of the dog show. "The easiest is showmanship."

Standing around and waiting is the worst part of the dog show, said Dakota Doolin, 14.

His male black lab mix, Lucky, is two years old.

"When you say heel and he doesn't do it, he loses points," Doolin said, explaining how points are awarded during the dog show.

He said he trains Lucky three days a week for two to three hours a day.

"Sometimes my grandma writes down what I do for progress," Doolin said of the way he records his progress with Lucky.

Doolin has been participating in 4-H for two years and the dog show is the only activity he participates in during the fair.

" (Lucky) likes to get up (after the show is over) and run to the car and stuff," Doolin said.
