The Moffat County High School student-athletic trainers are never present at the physicals for Bulldogs athletes, but they have the opportunity to indirectly learn from the annual check ups.
Every dollar from the physicals go toward a college scholarship for the high school trainers. This school year four senior trainers are eligible for the scholarship.
"We try to keep the scholarship related to the health field," said Jeff Pleasant, the high school athletic trainer and organizer of the physicals, "but if a trainer wants to go into elementary education we've done that too."
A $15 physical for MCHS and Craig Middle School student athletes will be available from 5:15 to 7:30 p.m. at Craig Medical Clinic on Tuesday, May 6, for high school students and for middle school students at the same time a week later, Tuesday, May 13.
While the spring sport seasons are still underway, the physicals will count for next year as well as for this summer, when camps may require them.
Physicals and proof of medical insurance are mandatory for any participant in Moffat County School District athletics.
Pleasant and the medical community of Craig team up to provide the examinations at no charge to themselves.
"The doctors do it out of the goodness of their hearts," said MCHS Athletic Director Jim Loughran. "We've tried other ways to do the physicals in the past but this seems the best way for the medical community and the students."
Loughran said that forms for the physicals and insurance information can be picked up at the activities office in the high school or at the main office of Craig Middle School.
This opportunity will be the only one available for the physicals, as there will not be a similar option in the fall.
"This is an inexpensive way for the athletes to get a physical," Loughran said, noting that normally a physical could cost anywhere from $50 to $125.
"Students wait for the last minute sometimes and they will miss some practice because of it," Pleasant said. "This also helps the school organize and be ready for the start of a new school year earlier."
