U.S. Congressman responds to locally driven petition

To the Editor:

As you know, we received a phone call from Congressman Scott McInnis' staff after the article by Josh Nichols was published in the Craig Daily Press. The caller advised me of the Congressman's decision to cosponsor the Reform of the Energy Workers Compensation Act (HR 1758).

We'd like to take this time to publicly thank Congressman McInnis on this action. I am confident that with his support, the sick nuclear weapons workers will finally receive the medical and financial assistance needed and deserved. And thanks also to Congressman Udall for his longstanding dedication to these workers.

We'd also like to thank the following:

  • My son, Greg Smith and his wife, Becky, who not only has been a source of comfort, but who also did much of the leg work on this petition drive.
  • The Independent Life Center, Horizons Specialized Services and the Veterans of Foreign Wars, who allowed me to circulate the petition at their places of business.
  • And finally, to the concerned citizens of Craig who signed the petition. There are many of you who we don't know personally, but you have our heartfelt thanks and appreciation.

George and Terrie Barrie,
